Delhi to Chakrata Trip- Offbeat Hills Near Dehradun

Delhi to Chakrata Trip- Offbeat Hills Near Dehradun

No crowds. No noise. Just pine forests, river mist, and Chakrata doing what hill towns do best.

📍 Delhi → Uttarakhand🛣️ ~330 km from Delhi⏱️ 7–8 hrs drive🗓️ Best: Mar – Jun & Sep – Nov

There’s a particular kind of exhaustion that belongs entirely to the Delhi traveller- the kind that comes not from work, but from the sheer volume of things: traffic, noise, plans, people, screens. And there is a particular kind of place that fixes it. Not a five-star resort in Shimla. Not the packed mall roads of Mussoorie. Something quieter. Something that still feels like it belongs to the hills and not to Instagram. Find all details of Delhi to Chakrata Trip in this Complete Travel Guide.

Chakrata is exactly that place. Sitting at an elevation of around 2,118 metres in the Jaunsar-Bawar region of Uttarakhand, about 90km north of Dehradun, Chakrata is a former British cantonment town that never quite got discovered by the mainstream. The road leading up is narrow and forested. The town itself is small. The views, on a clear day, stretch all the way to the snow-capped peaks of the Greater Himalayas. And on most weekdays, you might walk the ridge without passing another tourist.

That’s the thing about Chakrata. It doesn’t try to impress. It just is, and that quietness, after Delhi, feels like a gift.

Why Chakrata and Not the Usual Hills?

Most Delhi travellers, when the hills call, default to Shimla, Manali, or Mussoorie. These are wonderful places, but they are also, especially in peak season, overwhelmingly crowded. Traffic jams on mountain roads, overpriced hotels, and the general feeling that you’ve brought the city with you. Chakrata offers a genuine alternative as offbeat weekend destination from Delhi.

âś… Why Chakrata Works

  • Thin tourist footfall even in peak season
  • No commercial mall road culture
  • Dense deodar and rhododendron forests
  • Stunning Tiger Falls- one of India’s highest
  • Tribal Jaunsari culture still very much alive
  • Snow in winter without Shimla’s chaos

⚠️ Things to Know

  • Inner Line Permit needed for some areas (easy to get)
  • Limited ATMs- carry cash
  • Mobile connectivity patchy in forests
  • Roads narrow after Kalsi- drive carefully
  • Limited hotel options; book ahead in peak season

Chakrata also sits at the gateway to the Jaunsar-Bawar tribal belt, one of Uttarakhand’s most culturally distinctive regions. The Jaunsari people have their own dialect, customs, and a tradition of polyandry that has been documented since ancient times. Walking through villages here- Lakhamandal, Lokhandi, Deoban- you are not a tourist in a hill station. You’re a guest in a landscape with its own deep, unhurried life.

What to See and Do in Chakrata?

Tiger Falls

At roughly 312 feet, one of India’s highest direct waterfalls. A 1.5 km forest trek from the road leads you to a spectacular cascade hidden in the jungle. The pool at the base is cold, clear, and irresistible in summer.

Deoban

A dense deodar forest about 13km from Chakrata town, at 2,200m elevation. On clear days, the panoramic Himalayan views from Deoban include Bandarpoonch and Swargarohini peaks. One of the finest viewpoints in the region.

Best Tourist Places to visit in Chakrata

Chilmiri Neck

The highest point in Chakrata town, at around 2,470m. A short walk from the market, this ridge gives you sweeping views of the Tons valley and is the best spot for sunrise. Often dusted with snow in December and January.

Lakhamandal

An ancient Shiva temple complex on the banks of the Yamuna, about 50km from Chakrata. Rich in mythology and local legend, said to be the site where the Kauravas tried to burn the Pandavas. A fascinating detour.

Mundali

A ski and snow point about 26km from Chakrata at 2,600m. Receives heavy snowfall between December and February. Basic skiing facilities available; primarily known as a snow play destination for families.

Budher Caves & Grasslands

A hidden plateau with a series of limestone caves and open meadows about 30km from Chakrata. Less visited than Tiger Falls and Deoban, making it ideal for those who want solitude and a longer forest walk.

Inner Line Permit- Don’t Skip This

  • Parts of Chakrata and the Jaunsar-Bawar region require an Inner Line Permit as it is a cantonment area
  • Indian nationals can obtain the permit from the SDM office in Chakrata on arrival takes 15–20 minutes, usually free
  • Carry photo ID (Aadhaar/Voter ID) and a passport-sized photograph for each adult in your group
  • For group travel in a Tempo Traveller or Van, the driver typically helps facilitate this at the checkpost

When to Visit Chakrata from Delhi?

Chakrata’s high elevation means it has something to offer across most of the year, but the experience varies significantly by season. Choose the window that matches what you’re looking for:

🌸 March – June: Best for trekking & waterfalls❄️ Dec – Feb: Snow season, cold & magical🍂 Sep – Nov: Post-monsoon clarity, great views🌧️ July – Aug: Heavy rains, landslide risk

March to June is the most popular window. The forests are green, Tiger Falls is at good volume, rhododendrons bloom across the hillsides, and temperatures in Chakrata range between 8°C and 22°C- perfect for walking and camping. October and November bring post-monsoon clarity and exceptional long-range Himalayan views, with very few tourists. December to February is for snow-seekers- Chakrata and Mundali see regular snowfall, and the deodar forests under snow have a beauty that’s difficult to describe. Just ensure your vehicle has snow chains, and travel with an experienced driver who knows the mountain roads.

How to Reach Chakrata from Delhi?

Chakrata is approximately 330 km from Delhi, making it a manageable drive of 7 to 8 hours depending on traffic out of Delhi and the mountain stretch after Vikasnagar. The route takes you through some of the most pleasant driving in northern India- the plains give way to the Yamuna valley, and then the forested switchbacks begin.

Route SegmentDistanceApprox. Time
Delhi → Dehradun (NH334 / Expressway)~290 km5 – 5.5 hrs
Dehradun → Vikasnagar~30 km40 min
Vikasnagar → Kalsi~20 km30 min
Kalsi → Chakrata (mountain road)~50 km1.5 – 2 hrs
Delhi → Chakrata (Total)~330 km7 – 8 hrs

Route Tip: The Delhi–Dehradun Expressway (NH334) has dramatically cut driving time from Delhi to Dehradun to under 3 hours on a good day. After Dehradun, take the Vikasnagar route via Kalsi- it’s a beautiful riverside drive along the Yamuna before the hills begin. Avoid the Mussoorie bypass on this trip; it adds unnecessary time.

Can You Take a Train or Bus to Chakrata?

There is no direct rail or bus connectivity to Chakrata. The nearest railhead is Dehradun, from where you’ll need to hire local taxis or arrange a pickup for the remaining 90km. For solo travellers, this is manageable, but for families and groups of 6 or more, the logistics of coordinating multiple taxis from Dehradun make it far simpler to travel the full distance from Delhi in a single vehicle.

Why a Tempo Traveller or Urbania Van is the Right Call for Chakrata

Chakrata is not a destination you want to reach in pieces. The mountain road from Kalsi onwards- beautiful as it is narrow, winding, and requires a driver who is comfortable on hill roads. If your group is travelling in multiple small cars, you’ll spend the first evening comparing notes on who got lost where. A single, well-maintained vehicle with an experienced driver is simply the smarter choice.

Delhi to Chakrata Tempo Traveller Package

Most groups heading to Chakrata from Delhi book either a Tempo Traveller or, increasingly, the Force Urbania van. Both types of vehicles are available in multi seating options from 9 to 20 seats that make it best choice for family trips, group travel, friends travel. There is also mid-size traveller- 25 Seater Tempo Traveller to fit office group comfortably. Here’s why both work well for this trip specifically:

Urbania Van- Comfort for the Long Haul

The Delhi–Dehradun Expressway + 90 km of mountain road adds up to a long travel day. The Force Urbania, with its reclining aircraft-style seats, ample legroom, individual charging points, and superior suspension, makes the journey itself enjoyable. For families with older parents or young children, this difference in ride quality matters enormously. The Urbania fits 12 to 17 passengers comfortably and handles mountain roads well. Check our Urbania van hire in Delhi for pricing and availability.

Tempo Traveller- Reliable for Larger Groups

For friend groups of 15 to 26, the Tempo Traveller remains the go-to. Spacious, practical, and well-suited for a mix of highway and mountain driving, the Tempo Traveller is what most group travellers from Delhi use for Uttarakhand trips. A Suggested Itinerary for Delhi to Chakrata (3 Days)

Chakrata deserves at least two nights. A rushed one-day visit will leave you wanting more. Here’s how most groups structure the trip:

Day 1- Drive Day: Depart Delhi between 5 and 6 AM to beat NCR traffic. Take the Dehradun Expressway, stop for breakfast around Muzaffarnagar or Roorkee. Reach Dehradun by mid-morning, quick stop if needed. Take the Vikasnagar–Kalsi route, pausing at the confluence of the Yamuna and Tons rivers at Kalsi- a short stop worth taking. Reach Chakrata by early afternoon. Check in, walk to Chilmiri Neck for sunset views.

Day 2- Exploration: Early morning walk through the pine forests around the cantonment. Post-breakfast, drive to Tiger Falls– allow 2 to 3 hours here including the trek. Afternoon at Deoban for Himalayan views. Evening bonfire at your stay (most homestays and camps offer this). The nights in Chakrata are cold and brilliantly star-lit.

Day 3- Day Trip + Return: Morning drive to Mundali (snow permitting, December–February) or the Budher Caves route for a forest walk. Alternatively, detour to Lakhamandal (50km from Chakrata) before beginning the return drive to Delhi. Reach Delhi by late night.

🏕️ Where to Stay in Chakrata?

  • Homestays– The most authentic option. Local families offer warm rooms, home-cooked Garhwali food, and genuine hospitality. Book in advance; limited options.
  • Forest Rest Houses– Uttarakhand Forest Department bungalows are available at Deoban and Mundali. Basic but beautifully located. Book via the Uttarakhand Forest Department website.
  • Camps & Eco-Resorts– A few well-run tented camps operate near Tiger Falls and Deoban. Good for groups who want a campfire experience.
  • Budget Hotels in Chakrata town– Several small hotels along the main market road; functional and affordable for groups on a tight budget.

Practical Tips Before You Go

Carry sufficient cash as ATMs in Chakrata are limited and often unreliable. Mobile connectivity on most networks is patchy inside the forest areas- Jio works reasonably well in the town itself. The road from Kalsi to Chakrata is single-lane in sections and requires careful driving after dark, so plan to reach before sunset. Temperatures drop sharply at night even in summer- pack a fleece or light jacket regardless of the season. For those visiting between December and February, carry warm winter gear; nights can fall to -5°C.

There’s a phrase that Chakrata regulars and there is a loyal community of them, often use: “Mussoorie is where you go to say you’ve been to the hills. Chakrata is where you actually go to the hills.” It’s a little uncharitable to Mussoorie, perhaps, but the sentiment is right. Chakrata offers something increasingly rare in the hills near Delhi: the sense of actually being away. Pine-scented mornings. No mall road. A waterfall you might have entirely to yourself. That’s worth the extra hour on the road.
