01. Keoladeo Ghana National Park
The crown jewel- the reason most people come to Bharatpur in the first place. Spanning 29 sq km at the confluence of the Gambhir and Banganga rivers, this wetland hosts over 370 species of birds, from resident painted storks and pelicans to long-distance migrants from Siberia, China, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan. In winter you’ll encounter demoiselle cranes, geese, ducks, Eurasian teals, and if you’re very lucky- the rare Siberian crane. 02. Lohagarh Fort- The Iron Fort
Unlike Rajasthan’s flamboyant palaces, Lohagarh Fort radiates raw, rugged defiance. 01. Deeg Palace- Palace of 2,000 Fountains
Deeg is Bharatpur’s biggest secret. Built as a summer retreat by the Jat rulers in the 18th century, this palace complex is a remarkable blend of Rajput and Mughal aesthetics- sandstone and marble interwoven with symmetrical gardens, water tanks, and a jaw-dropping network of 2,000 fountains. The Sawan-Bhadon pavilion is legendary: when fountains run, water is channelled through coloured glass to simulate the monsoon experience. The fountains operate only twice a year (around Teej festival and on 4th February), so check dates when planning. The palace is often considered the most symmetric Mughal-style structure in India after the Taj Mahal. Note: the road to Deeg is rough- go in an SUV or sturdy car, not a hatchback.

02. Fatehpur Sikri
Just 15 km from Bharatpur on the Agra road, Fatehpur Sikri is Emperor Akbar’s magnificent ghost city- a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as the Mughal capital for only 14 years before being mysteriously abandoned. The complex is extraordinarily preserved: the Diwan-i-Khas with its legendary central pillar, the Panch Mahal rising five stories with hundreds of columns, the Buland Darwaza (one of the tallest gateways in the world), and the tomb of Sufi saint Salim Chisti where people tie threads and make wishes. 05 Band Baretha Wildlife Reserve
For the off-beat explorers in your gang, Band Baretha is a revelation. This old royal hunting ground of the Bharatpur rulers, built on a dam over the Kakund River (started in 1866), now hosts over 200 bird species including the rare and elusive Black Bittern. How to Reach Bharatpur from Delhi / NCR
Train
Multiple daily trains from Delhi to Bharatpur Jn. (~3 hrs). Also connected from Agra, Jaipur, and Mumbai. Most affordable for a group, but less convenient to explore places nearby.
Road from Delhi / Noida / Gurugram
Take the Yamuna Expressway to Mathura, then NH-21 to Bharatpur. ~3 hrs from Noida. From Gurugram: KMP Expressway to Palwal, then NH-2 to Mathura, right on NH-11. ~3–3.5 hrs. For a luxurious journey, Urbania Van on rent in Delhi is a good choice.
By Air
Nearest airports: Agra (56 km, ~1 hr drive) or Jaipur (174 km). If you are coming from any other city in India or another country by flight, land at nearest airports and continue with road trip. Delhi IGI is 182 km and probably where most friends will fly into. Cab or train from Agra / Delhi to Bharatpur.
