If there is one thing I have learned while exploring North India, it’s that every region has a story to tell-and Jain temples tell some of the most peaceful ones. They are not just about prayer or ritual; they are about harmony, art as well as centuries of devotion carved beautifully in stone.

3. Sri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir, Delhi

Oldest Jain Temple in Delhi

Now we are moving towards Dil Walo Ki Delhi, right across from the Red Fort, where the city’s oldest Jain temple, Sri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir, stands proudly. Built in 1656 with beautiful red stone, making it worth seeing, it is dedicated to Lord Mahavira and continues to attract worshippers and travelers from around the world.

What I love most about this temple is the Jain Bird Hospital behind it. Injured birds are lovingly care as well as treated here, which shows a perfect example of Jain compassion in action. The calmness inside this temple feels almost unreal, especially compared to the noise of Chandni Chowk outside.

If you want to do something different, like want to feel the depth soul of Jain spirituality, Hastinapur in Uttar Pradesh is the place. The Digamber Jain Bada Mandir is one of the holiest sites here and is also called the spiritual capital of Jainism.

It is believed that this holy land is the birthplace of three Tirthankaras-Shantinath, Kunthunath and Arahnath. The temple area is beautifully designed, with meditation halls and a tall Manastambh (pillar of pride) that represent a symbol of peace as well as humility.

And last, but not least, Tijara Ji Jain Temple is my personal favorite! Tijara Temple is located not too far from Alwar, and it is said to be an Atishay Kshetra or a place of miracles. The temple is dedicated to Lord Chandraprabhu, the 8th Tirthankara, and came into prominence when a miraculous idol was found there in 1956.

Surrounded by hills and endless skies, Tijara is the kind of place to sit in solitude, and as you do, you are struck with a visceral sense of calm. The atmosphere is spiritual and scenic, and perfect for anyone looking to detach from the chaos of entirely too much daily life.
