How to Reach Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga from Delhi

But the question that arises in the mind is how to reach Omkareshwar from Delhi. Let’s start to find out the ways that make your journey comfortable and relaxed.

Various ways to reach Omkareshwar from Delhi

There is no direct connectivity to Omkareshwar from Delhi; you have to reach Indore first, which is the closest big or well-known city. From Indore, Omkareshwar is approximately 81 km.

By Air:

If you have a lack of time and comfort is your top priority, then it is a good option for you.

Delhi to Indore: There are many direct flights available from Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) to Indore’s Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport (IDR). The travel time is as short as between 1 hour 20 minutes and 1 hour 35 minutes. Don’t miss out on grabbing the best deals by booking in advance.

After reaching Indore, you have several options.

  • You can take a Taxi/Cab as it is the most convenient way. Taxis are easily available outside the airport, and it takes about 2-2.5 hours to reach Omkareshwar. It is most comfortable for those who are traveling with their family, along with luggage.
  • But if the budget is a little tight, then choosing a bus is a good option. They are provided by both Government and private buses, which run from Indore to Omkareshwar.
  • You can take a local train from Indore to Omkareshwar Road (OM), which is the nearest railway station to the temple. From Omkareshwar Road, you will have to take an auto or taxi to reach the temple.

By Train:

If you have sufficient time, then it’s a personal suggestion to go by Train as you will get a chance to see the changing landscapes of the country throughout the journey, which makes your journey more enjoyable.

From Delhi to Indore/Ujjain/Khandwa, these are all the major nearby railway stations. As no direct train runs from Delhi to Omkareshwar. You will have to book a ticket to a nearby major railway station.

  • If you are looking for Indore Junction (INDB) as the stop, then several trains run from Delhi to Indore, such as the NDLS INDB Express (12416). The journey takes about 12-13 hours.
  • If you stop at Ujjain Junction (UJN), which is about 145 km from Omkareshwar. This is also an important railway hub for trains such as the Malwa Express (12920), which runs from Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Dr Ambedkar Ngr. The journey time is 14 to 15 hours. From Ujjain, you can go to Omkareshwar by cab or bus.
  • Another nearby railway station is Khandwa (KNW). There are several trains from Delhi to Khandwa (like SGNR NED SPL or NDLS SBC SF SPL), which take around 13 to 15 hours. Omkareshwar is around 70 to 80 km from Khandwa and can be reached by taxi or local transport.

After reaching Indore, Ujjain, or Khandwa, go for the same local transport options (taxi/bus/auto) as those used for air travel to reach Omkareshwar.

By Road:

If you are also the one who loves riding or travelling with complete freedom, then nothing is better than a road trip from Delhi to Omkareshwar for a memorable experience.

The total distance by road is roughly 850 to 950 km, which depends on the route you select. The most common as well as well-maintained route includes joining National Highway 44 and then National Highway 52. These highways give a good driving experience.

The journey could take around 14 to 20 hours, which excludes the break time, so it is advisable to cover it within two days and stay overnight somewhere. Cities like Jaipur or Kota can be good for a small stop in between.

Two options for a road trip

  • Own vehicle: If you like driving, this gives you complete freedom.

If you have a few more days, then add Ujjain to your bucket list, as most of the devotees combine their visit to Omkareshwar with Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain. Which is not so far from Omkareshwar, just 146 km from there.

Accommodation: In Omkareshwar, the range of accommodation options includes economical guesthouses and well-priced hotels. Remember, booking early is advisable during the peak season.

Local Transport: You will find auto rickshaws, shared jeeps as means of local transport. To explore places near Omkareshwar, a private vehicle such as a 9 Seater Tempo Traveller on Rent in Delhi is best, especially for families and small groups seeking comfort during the journey.

Best time to visit: Omkareshwar is best visited during the winter months of October to March.
